AEP Audience Export by Lens

Fast When It Can Be, Patient When It Must Be
  • R is usually quick: Lens reads the rows and builds the CSV as they arrive, and a small audience is done in seconds.

  • P depends on Adobe. The profiles come out of an Adobe export job, and anything from minutes to a few hours is normal whatever the audience holds; the biggest audiences can take longer. Lens submits the job, checks on it every minute, and the panel tells you so.

Leave the Page, Click Again

You do not have to watch it.

  • The export runs in the extension, not in the page. Reload, switch sandboxes or lock the machine: the panel comes back where you left it.

  • Lens remembers an export for six hours. Click the same button again and it picks up the export already running instead of starting another.

  • If something goes wrong, Lens tries the whole export once more by itself. If the page loses touch with Lens, the export carries on in a new background tab. You do not click anything.

  • If Adobe returns nothing to export, Lens says so instead of handing you an empty file.

Files You Can Open

Very large audiences arrive as several CSV files of up to one million rows each, so every file opens whole in Excel. When the download finishes, each file appears in the panel as a link that opens it. The file name carries what you need to find it later: tenant, sandbox, whether it holds records or profiles, the audience name and a timestamp.

Who is this for ?

For Marketers Click, wait, open the CSV. No query to write and no job to configure.

For Data Engineers The raw rows and the merged profiles, from the same page, with every call Lens made logged for support.

For Analytics Leaders Audience questions get answered with a file in minutes of your time, not a ticket.

What Is Lens?

Lens is a Chrome extension built for teams running Adobe Experience Platform. It works inside the AEP interface you already have open and uses your existing session: no extra login, no API credentials to configure, no data export step. Earlier articles in this series covered analytics component governance in CJA and Adobe Analytics, the Schema ERD Canvas, the Source Dataflow Canvas, Analyze Failed Batch, and Smart Search on the Audiences page. This one covers getting an audience's data out of AEP without a query or an export job.

R and P Answer Different Questions

For the same audience the two files can differ in row count and columns. That gap is the identity graph and the merge policy at work, and Lens does not hide it. Choose R when you need the data as stored. Choose P when you need people as AEP sees them.

Lens shows only the buttons that make sense for an audience's origin, and greys one out, with the reason as a tooltip, when your permissions do not allow it.

One Panel (Snackbar) for Every Export

Click a button and a Lens panel appears along the bottom of the page. Each export you start gets its own line: the letter, the audience name, a progress bar, the minutes elapsed and a Cancel button. Run up to ten exports at once and watch them side by side.

The panel stays out of your way. Drag it up if it covers something you need. Minimize it to a small badge and it opens again by itself when an export finishes. Move to other AEP pages, and it follows you.

A campaign manager asks for the list of people in an audience. A data engineer asks for the raw rows behind it. Both are reasonable requests, and in AEP neither is a button. You write a query, or you configure an export job, wait, find where it landed, and download files that someone then has to convert. Lens turns both into a download icon on the Audiences page.

What Is Export Audience?

Next to every audience that has profiles, Lens adds up to two orange download buttons, each with a small letter:

  • R, records: the raw rows behind the audience, as they sit in its dataset (datalake). These are the records before profiles are merged, so several rows per person are normal.

  • P, profiles: the merged, identity-stitched people in the audience, the view that matches the profile count AEP shows from United profile store (UPS).

The same buttons appear on an audience's details page, beside the Profile count.
